The Elder Scrolls Online Update 51 could be one of the most exciting quality-of-life updates for solo players in a long time. Instead of relying on one huge feature, this update improves several different systems that make solo adventures more flexible, rewarding, and enjoyable.

From dedicated solo dungeons and customizable difficulty to improved build flexibility, revamped Antiquities, achievement tracking, and a new Rumor system, Update 51 gives solo adventurers plenty of reasons to return to Tamriel.

New Solo Dungeons Designed for One Player

One of the biggest additions in Update 51 is the introduction of dedicated solo versions of March of Sacrifice and Moon Hunter Keep.

These aren't simply simplified story modes. The dungeons retain their bosses, secrets, atmosphere, and mechanics while being redesigned and balanced around one player or one player accompanied by a companion.

The developers have also indicated that more solo-focused dungeons could be added in the future. For now, these two dungeons give solo players a new way to experience challenging dungeon content without needing to assemble a traditional group.

Choose Your Own Difficulty with Misfortunes

Update 51 also introduces the Misfortune system, allowing players to decide how challenging their solo dungeon experience should be.

With zero Misfortunes, the experience is much more relaxed and suitable for players who want to explore the story, mechanics, and lore without excessive pressure.

One Misfortune increases the challenge slightly, while two begin putting greater emphasis on mechanics, damage, and resource management. Three Misfortunes are designed for players looking for a much more demanding solo challenge, where optimized builds become increasingly important.

This system is particularly appealing because players aren't locked into one difficulty. You can enjoy a casual exploration run or gradually increase the challenge as your character becomes stronger.

More Freedom with Hybrid Builds

Another major improvement is the continued development of hybridization. Update 51 brings greater consistency to how weapon and spell scaling interact with different systems, including Mundus Stones, buffs, class passives, alchemy, and item sets.

For solo players, this could make build experimentation much easier. Instead of feeling forced into a strictly stamina- or magicka-focused setup, you can experiment with combinations that better suit your preferred playstyle.

This extra flexibility is especially useful when building a character capable of handling both damage and survivability without relying on group members to fill specific roles.

A Better Way to Track Achievements

Completionists also have something to look forward to. Update 51 introduces the ability to pin achievements, allowing you to keep track of objectives while exploring.

Even better, once you finish a pinned achievement, the next relevant achievement can automatically move into the tracking position. This reduces the need to repeatedly open menus and manually search for the next objective.

For players who enjoy collecting achievements while exploring the world, this small feature could make a surprisingly big difference.

Customize Your HUD

PC players also receive access to a new HUD Editor, currently presented as a beta feature. It allows players to move, resize, or hide various interface elements directly within the game.

This can help reduce screen clutter and create a cleaner interface that better matches individual preferences.

Console players should note that the HUD Editor is currently limited to PC, so this particular feature is not yet available on consoles.

Antiquities Become More Accessible

The Antiquities system is also receiving improvements aimed at making early progression smoother. This is particularly good news for solo players because certain Antiquities can provide extremely useful tools for independent gameplay.

One standout example is the Ring of the Pale Order, which offers strong self-healing potential and can be particularly valuable when you don't have a healer supporting you.

A faster Antiquities progression could make obtaining useful Mythic items less frustrating, especially for players who want to build characters specifically around solo content.

Explore the World Through the New Rumor System

Update 51 introduces Rumors, an exploration-focused mystery system designed for players who enjoy discovering things without being given every answer.

Rather than providing a traditional quest with a clear list of objectives, Rumors offer clues, hints, and environmental storytelling. Players then have to investigate the world and figure out what to do next.

Rumors are divided into three tiers: Whispers, Plots, and Conspiracies. Each tier offers a different level of complexity and commitment.

This could be particularly appealing to players who prefer discovering secrets naturally instead of following a quest marker from one location to another.

ESO has always promoted the idea of “play how you want,” and Update 51 appears to take that philosophy even further. Whether you enjoy exploring Tamriel at your own pace, creating unusual builds, hunting achievements, collecting Antiquities, or challenging yourself with difficult solo content, there is plenty here to look forward to.
