Choosing the right weapon in The Elder Scrolls Online is one of the most important decisions you'll make when creating a character. While many players still associate certain weapons with either Magicka or Stamina builds, ESO's modern combat system offers much more flexibility than it did in the past. Understanding how each weapon works, what role it performs best, and which builds can benefit from it will help you create a more effective character for both PvE and PvP.

Understanding ESO's Dynamic Scaling System

One of the biggest changes to ESO's combat system is dynamic scaling. Today, nearly every ability scales based on your highest offensive stats rather than simply the resource it consumes.

For example, abilities that cost Magicka are no longer limited to traditional Magicka builds, and Stamina abilities aren't exclusive to Stamina characters. Instead, the game calculates damage and healing using whichever combination of Weapon Damage, Spell Damage, Stamina, or Magicka is highest on your character.

This means players have much more freedom when choosing weapons. However, weapon selection still matters because each weapon skill line provides unique passives, utility, resource recovery, and combat advantages.

Two-Handed Weapons

Two-Handed weapons are primarily designed for Stamina-based gameplay and remain one of the strongest choices for aggressive PvP builds. Their abilities focus on dealing heavy burst damage while offering useful mobility and offensive pressure.

Heavy attacks with a Two-Handed weapon restore Stamina, making them an excellent option for Stamina characters. Interestingly, many Magicka builds also equip a Two-Handed weapon because of the valuable passive abilities available in the skill line. These passives can improve offensive performance and provide bonuses that remain useful regardless of your primary resource.

One-Handed and Shield

Sword and Shield continues to be the preferred weapon combination for tanks thanks to its excellent defensive capabilities. Blocking becomes much stronger with this setup, allowing players to absorb significant amounts of incoming damage while protecting themselves and their teammates.

Outside of tanking, Sword and Shield also appears frequently in PvP. Some Magicka builds use it because the additional survivability allows slower characters to safely approach opponents and remain alive during extended fights. Heavy attacks with One-Handed and Shield restore Stamina.

Dual Wield

Dual Wield remains one of the most popular weapon choices for Stamina PvE damage dealers. Fast attacks, strong offensive passives, and excellent damage output make it ideal for dungeon and trial content.

Although it's mainly associated with Stamina builds, certain passive skills also make Dual Wield attractive for Magicka characters. Depending on the weapons equipped, players can gain bonuses such as additional penetration, critical chance, spell damage, or critical damage, making it a surprisingly flexible option. Heavy attacks restore Stamina while using Dual Wield.

Bow

The Bow is the primary ranged weapon for Stamina builds. It performs well in both PvE and PvP by allowing players to deal consistent damage from a safe distance while maintaining mobility.

Unlike some other weapon types, Bow offers very little value to Magicka characters because most of its passives and active abilities are designed specifically around Stamina gameplay. Heavy attacks restore Stamina when using a Bow.

Destruction Staff

The Destruction Staff remains the standard weapon for most Magicka damage dealers. Whether you're clearing dungeons, completing solo content, or participating in PvP, this weapon provides reliable damage and excellent Magicka sustain.

Many healers and even some tanks also keep a Destruction Staff on one of their weapon bars because it offers useful utility skills alongside respectable damage potential. Heavy attacks restore Magicka while using a Destruction Staff.

Restoration Staff

As its name suggests, the Restoration Staff is primarily intended for healers. Its abilities provide powerful healing, defensive buffs, and resource support for groups during difficult encounters.

However, Restoration Staff isn't limited to healing builds. Some Stamina PvP characters use it as a defensive secondary weapon because abilities like Rapid Regeneration provide strong healing while costing relatively little Magicka. The Restoration Staff ultimate is also considered one of the strongest defensive ultimates available. Heavy attacks restore Magicka when using a Restoration Staff.
