The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) is about to receive some thrilling updates in Q1 of 2025, and players are in for a treat. While some of these changes were hinted at in the studio director's letter last month, many are completely new surprises that will enhance the overall experience. With the much-anticipated Update 45 set to roll out in March, here’s a breakdown of the exciting improvements coming to ESO.

1. Champion Point Changes: A Long-Awaited Quality of Life Improvement

One of the most talked-about changes is the overhaul of the Green Champion Point tree. For years, players have requested changes to improve their crafting and quality of life experience, and now the developers have answered. The Green Champion Point nodes, which were previously locked to slotted stars, are being converted into passive bonuses. This means players will no longer need to dedicate valuable slots to bonuses that don’t affect combat, such as those related to crafting and quality of life.

The following nine stars will be transformed into passives:

   Meticulous Disassembly
   Plentiful Harvest
   Treasure Hunter
   Rasher
   Liquid Efficiency
   Homemaker
   Professional Upkeep
   Infamous
   Cutpurse Art

This change will free up slots for combat-related abilities or other quality of life bonuses, such as mount speed or gathering efficiency, which can now be slotted more easily.

2. Visual Improvements to Starter Zones

Another major change focuses on the visual overhaul of ESO's starter zones. These areas have not been updated in over a decade, and now, thanks to Update 45, the lighting, textures, clutter placement, and terrain transitions will be significantly improved. This upgrade will make the game’s early zones look more natural and vibrant, improving the experience for new players.

Zones like Baloyan, Bleak Rock Isle, Stros M'kai, and Karthy Roost will see major visual improvements, making them feel more alive and immersive. The addition of better water animations and effects will also enhance the overall ambiance, giving players a more polished and enjoyable start to their ESO journey.

3. Streamlined World Map for a Better User Experience

ESO’s world map will undergo several improvements in Update 45, including the removal of unnecessary visual clutter. The map will now show only the zone you’re in and the nearest way shrine, simplifying the experience for players and making navigation more straightforward. As you discover major cities or hubs, those way shrines will replace the starting zone shrine on the map.

Additionally, ESO will introduce color-coded map pins for easier identification of key points, along with a new animation for zooming in and out of zone maps, making the interface even more user-friendly.

4. Disguises Become Collectibles

Disguises in ESO, which previously took up valuable inventory space, will now be converted into Collectibles. This change should help free up space in your inventory, giving you more room for other useful items. Although this update might not cover every disguise in the game, it’s a great step toward improving the inventory management system and reducing unnecessary clutter.

5. Improved Mount Speed for a Better New Player Experience

One of the most requested improvements is to the base mount speed in ESO. Players will notice that mounts are now faster from the outset, even without any training or buffs. This improvement will make a noticeable difference, especially for new players, as mounts in ESO currently move at the same speed as sprinting unless enhanced by specific bonuses. The new base speed should make the mount feel like a true upgrade, improving the experience for those just starting out.

6. Add-On Support Coming to Consoles

In another exciting announcement, ESO is preparing to bring add-ons to consoles with Update 45. Console players, particularly those using Xbox Series X/S or PlayStation 5, will soon be able to test and use add-ons that were previously only available on PC. Add-on developers will get all the necessary details next week to begin working on console-specific add-ons. This move marks a significant step forward for ESO, allowing console players to personalize and optimize their gameplay experience with third-party tools.

7. The Vengeance Campaign: A Special Performance Test

ESO will also host a special Vengeance Campaign during week two of the PTS. This campaign will be a performance-focused test designed to simplify skills and abilities, reducing the complexity to improve server performance. Skills will be streamlined, and passives will be removed to test the limits of ESO’s server capacity. This test will help ensure smoother gameplay for large numbers of players, especially during large-scale events like Cyrodiil.

With these exciting updates, ESO is making great strides toward improving the player experience. The changes to Champion Points, starter zone visuals, and world map will benefit both new and veteran players alike. Meanwhile, the adjustments to mounts, disguises, and add-on support will improve convenience and personalization. ESO continues to evolve and adapt, ensuring a high-quality experience for its community.
